SSI in 2026: Why $994 Is Not the Whole Payment

● ACTIVE ◐ RATE CHANGES EACH JANUARY NATIONAL

Why we did not publish a chart

Search for state SSI supplement amounts and you will find tables full of confident numbers. Most of them are close to useless, and not because the writers were careless.

State supplements are usually not flat amounts. The payment changes depending on whether you live alone, live in someone else's household, or live in a licensed care facility — and it changes again with your other income. A state that "pays $200" may pay $200 to exactly one category of person and nothing to you.

So the useful question is not what the number is. It is which agency holds it, and whether you have to ask.

Supplemental Security Income pays $994 a month to an individual in 2026 and $1,491 to a couple. That is the federal part, and it is the same in every state.

Forty-four states and the District of Columbia add money on top of it. Six states and one territory add nothing.

The federal part

The increase came from a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment, calculated from the change in consumer prices between the third quarter of 2024 and the third quarter of 2025. The rate moves every January, so a figure you read in December is last year's.

Your actual check is usually lower than the maximum. Social Security subtracts countable income, and what counts is not obvious — some earnings are excluded, some are counted at half, and help with food or housing from a relative can reduce the payment.

The state part

This is where most of the confusion lives. Every state falls into one of three groups, and which group you are in decides whether you have to do anything at all.

Thirty-three is the number that matters. In two out of every three states, the extra payment comes from a state agency that Social Security does not speak for — which means the letter announcing your SSI award will not mention it, and no one at Social Security is obliged to bring it up.

Six states sit in two groups at once. Delaware, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island split the work by category. Social Security handles some, the state handles the rest.

Who qualifies

SSI is for people who are 65 or older, blind, or living with a disability, and who have very little income and very few resources. It is needs-based, so unlike Social Security retirement it does not depend on your work history.

The resource limits are strict and have not moved in a long time. Your home and one vehicle generally do not count. Almost everything else does.

If you receive SSI, you are automatically eligible for Extra Help with prescription drug costs, and in most states you are automatically eligible for Medicaid. Those two happen without a separate application in most cases — which is worth knowing before someone charges you to file for them.

Traps

Trap 01

The number in your award letter may not be the total. In thirty-three states the state supplement is a separate payment from a separate agency. One letter, one number, and a second payment nobody mentioned.

Trap 02

Moving in with family can cut your check. If someone gives you free food or housing, Social Security may treat that as income and reduce the payment — often by a third. It is legal, it is routine, and it surprises people every time. Ask what happens before you move, not after.

Trap 03

Working does not automatically end SSI. Social Security excludes part of what you earn and counts only half of the rest, so a job usually reduces the payment rather than stopping it. People turn down work believing the opposite.

Trap 04

Crossing a state line changes the math. Move from a state where Social Security combines the payment to one where the state pays it separately, and the second payment stops until you go and claim it. Move to Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Tennessee, or West Virginia and it stops for good.

Trap 05

Nobody should charge you to apply. SSI, Extra Help, and state supplements are all free to apply for. Representatives who help with disability claims are paid out of back benefits under rules Social Security sets — never up front, and never for filling in a form you could file yourself.

The federal rate changes every January. State supplement amounts depend on your living arrangement and income and are set by each state. We do not publish a state amount chart because a single figure would be wrong for most readers. Confirm with Social Security or your state agency. Benefit Almanac is not a government agency and cannot determine your eligibility.
