California SSI Payment Amount 2026: SSP Rates by Living Situation
● ACTIVE ◐ RATES CHANGE EACH JANUARY CALIFORNIA
One page says California's supplement is $239 a month. Another says $266. A third gives a number somewhere between.
California does not publish a single supplement figure, and neither does Social Security. What gets published is a table of combined totals — federal plus state, thirteen rows, sorted by who you live with and what kind of roof is over you. Subtract the federal rate from any one row and you get a different "supplement." All of them are real. None of them is the number.
Find your row below. That total is what matters, not the difference.
California pays a state supplement on top of federal SSI, and Social Security sends both in one check. The combined maximum in 2026 runs from $62 to $3,239.14 a month.
Which end you land on depends almost entirely on your living situation.
If you live alone or on your own
| Your situation | Aged | Disabled | Blind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent living | $1,233.94 | $1,233.94 | $1,318.32 |
| Independent living, no cooking facilities | $1,362.81 | $1,362.81 | N/A |
| Living in someone else's household | $907.87 | $907.87 | $992.25 |
| Non-medical out-of-home care | $1,626.07 | $1,626.07 | $1,626.07 |

Two rows deserve a second look.
No cooking facilities pays more, not less. If your room or unit has no kitchen, the combined payment rises to $1,362.81 — about $129 a month above the standard independent living rate. The reasoning is straightforward: someone who cannot cook has to buy prepared food, which costs more. Almost nobody knows this row exists.
Living in someone else's household pays less than the federal rate alone. $907.87 is below the $994 federal maximum. When another person provides your food and shelter, Social Security reduces the federal portion, and California's supplement does not fully make up the gap.

Couples
| Situation | Both aged or disabled | Both blind | One blind, one aged or disabled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent living | $2,098.83 | $2,324.35 | $2,238.44 |
| Independent living, no cooking facilities | $2,356.57 | N/A | N/A |
| Living in someone else's household | $1,609.70 | $1,835.22 | $1,749.31 |

Blindness raises the rate at every level. A blind couple living independently receives $2,324.35 against $2,098.83 for an aged or disabled couple — $225 a month more, or $2,700 a year.
If you live in a facility
Two very different numbers, and the difference is who is paying for the bed.
| Type of facility | Single | Couple |
|---|---|---|
| Non-medical out-of-home care | $1,626.07 | $3,239.14 |
| Medicaid facility | $62.00 | $124.00 |

Non-medical out-of-home care means a residential care facility or board and care home where you pay for the room yourself. The payment is the highest on the whole table because it is meant to cover that bill.
A Medicaid facility is different. Medicaid is already paying for your care, so SSI drops to $62 a month. That is not a benefit cut in the usual sense — it is a personal needs allowance, money for clothes, a haircut, a phone. It is small, and families are often shocked by it. It is also the correct amount.
How to claim it
One application at Social Security covers the federal payment and the California supplement together. Medi-Cal follows automatically. There is no county form for the money itself.

Moving in with family costs $326 a month. Independent living pays $1,233.94. The household of another pays $907.87. That is $3,913 a year, and it happens the month you move. Sometimes moving in still makes financial sense once rent disappears. Run the numbers before the van arrives, not after.
No kitchen means a higher payment. If your place has no cooking facilities, the rate is $1,362.81 instead of $1,233.94. Single rooms, some SROs, and some board arrangements qualify. If that describes where you live and you are being paid the standard rate, ask.
Nobody gets the maximum automatically. Every figure here is a ceiling. Other income — a small pension, part-time wages, Social Security retirement — is subtracted. If your check is lower than the table, that is usually why, not an error.
Blind rates are higher, and they are not automatic. California pays more at every level for blindness. If your vision has deteriorated to the legal threshold since you were approved, that is a change worth reporting — it is worth $84 a month living independently, and $225 for a couple.
The $62 nursing home rate is not a mistake. When Medicaid pays for your care, SSI drops to a personal needs allowance. Families see the number and assume something has gone wrong. It has not. What is worth checking is whether the facility is correctly classified — non-medical out-of-home care pays $1,626.07 instead.
These figures expire. The table is revised every January with the cost-of-living adjustment. A page quoting last year's numbers is not lying, it is just out of date — which is why every figure here carries the publication it came from and the date we checked it.
